KAMPALA, September 30, 2025 — Uganda will mark the belated International Coffee Day [ICD] on 2 October 2025 at the Jinja Agricultural Showgrounds in Jinja City, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF]. The event is being organised in partnership with the Uganda Coffee Federation [UCF].
This year’s celebrations will be held under the local theme: “Exploring Opportunities Along the Coffee Value Chain in Busoga Sub-region.”
The event will bring together key stakeholders from Uganda’s coffee industry to highlight the transformative potential of coffee in improving household incomes across the Busoga sub-region.
“The event will also showcase everything from the latest on-farm improvements to cutting-edge value addition technologies,” organisers noted in a newspaper advertisement yesterday.
International Coffee Day is observed globally on 1 October by 77 member states of the International Coffee Organisation [ICO], alongside numerous coffee associations worldwide. This year’s global theme is: “Embracing Collaboration More Than Ever.”
The day celebrates the diversity, quality, and cultural significance of coffee, while raising awareness about the millions of farmers and workers whose livelihoods depend on the crop. It also serves as a platform for coffee lovers around the world to share their passion for the beverage and support sustainable coffee production.
Although countries celebrate their own national coffee days on various dates, the ICO member states agreed in March 2014 to commemorate International Coffee Day on 1 October each year, creating a unified global celebration of the sector.
Uganda, recognised as one of the birthplaces of Robusta coffee, also produces Arabica coffee on smallholder farms, making the crop a vital source of income for many households across the country.
According to a recent report, Uganda exported 7.93 million bags of coffee between August 2024 and July 2025, earning US$ 2.25 billion [approximately Shs 8.07 trillion]. This represents a significant increase from 6.88 million bags worth US$ 1.41 billion [Shs 5.06 trillion] during the same period in the previous year. This marks a 15.29 percent rise in quantity and a 59.42 percent increase in value.
