Uganda fetches Shs 8.8trn from coffee exports in one year – report

According to the report, in November 2025, Uganda exported 640,328 bags of coffee worth US$ 185.99mln [Shs 664.94bln]

KAMPALA, January 12, 2026 — Uganda earned Shs 8.8 trillion from coffee exports over a twelve-month period, according to a new government report.

Coffee exports for the period December 2024 to November 2025 totalled 8.7 million 60-kg bags valued at US$2.4 billion [Shs 8.8 trillion], up from 5.8mln bags worth US$ 1.4bln [Shs 5.2trn] recorded in the previous year [December 2023 to November 2024].

The figures are contained in the latest Monthly Coffee Report for November 2025, released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF].

This represents an increase of 48.49 percent in volume and 77.33 percent in value year-on-year. The report further shows that 65 percent of total export volumes were handled by the top 10 exporters, out of 76 companies that exported coffee during the month, compared with 64 percent in October 2025.

The increase in export volumes was attributed to higher coffee production, as harvesting peaked in the Central and Eastern regions. Global coffee prices also improved due to weather-related concerns in Vietnam, the world’s largest producer of Robusta coffee.

November 2025 performance

According to the report, in November 2025, Uganda exported 640,328 bags of coffee worth US$ 185.99mln [Shs 664.94bln]. This included 510,091 bags of Robusta, valued at US$ 131.17mln [Shs 468.93bln], and 130,237 bags of Arabica, worth US$54.83mln [Shs 196.0bln].

Compared with November 2024, this reflected an increase of 60 per cent in volume and 70 percent in value. Robusta exports rose by 50 percent in volume and 44 percent in value, while Arabica exports increased by 122 percent in volume and 211 percent in value.

Outlook for December 2025

Uganda’s coffee exports are projected to reach 500,000 60-kg bags in December 2025, as the main harvest season in parts of the Central and Eastern regions comes to an end.

Export Destinations

Italy remained Uganda’s leading coffee export destination in November 2025, accounting for 25.80 per cent of total exports, slightly down from 26.22 per cent in October. It was followed by Germany [14.01 percent], the United States [7.99 percent], India [7.13 percent] and Belgium [5.30 percent].

The top 10 export destinations collectively accounted for 76.29 percent of total exports, compared with 74.66 percent the previous month.

Exports to African countries totalled 55,671 bags, representing 9 per cent of total exports, down from 108,540 bags [16 percent] in October. Key African markets included Morocco, Algeria, Sudan, Tunisia, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt and Senegal.

Europe remained the largest destination for Ugandan coffee, accounting for 67 percent of exports, up from 63 percent in October 2025.

Global situation

Global coffee production for the 2025/26 season is forecast to rise by 3.5mln bags to a record 178.8mln bags, driven by recovery in Vietnam and record output in Indonesia and Ethiopia. These gains are expected to outweigh production declines in Brazil and Colombia.

World coffee bean exports are projected to increase by 2.3mln bags to 123.8mln bags, while global consumption is forecast to reach a record 173.9mln bags. As a result, ending stocks are expected to fall for the fifth consecutive year to 20.1mln bags.

In response to tightening supply, coffee prices, as measured by the International Coffee Organisation [ICO] monthly composite price index, have nearly tripled over the period, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Coffee: World Markets and Trade Report [December 2025].

Coffee consumption and promotion

Between 20 and 21 November 2025, MAAIF participated in the Coffee and Tea Expo in Cairo, organised by the Uganda Tourism Board, as part of efforts to promote Ugandan coffee exports to Egypt.

Egypt was identified as a strategic target market due to its large population, strong coffee-drinking culture, high tourist inflows and central location. The Ugandan delegation showcased local coffee brands and presented investment opportunities in the coffee sector to Egyptian investors.

The expo highlighted growing global demand for coffee and the need to expand production to meet emerging market opportunities. Egypt receives an estimated 16mln tourists annually, indicating strong potential demand for food and beverage products such as coffee.

The Ugandan Embassy in Egypt is also positioning Uganda as a complementary tourist destination, a move expected to boost tourism and increase coffee consumption at source. The Cairo Expo, which will now be held annually, is expected to attract more exporters and buyers, enabling direct engagement and the securing of trade contracts.
