KAMPALA, July 3, 2024 – Uganda, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives [MTIC], will neither join the rest of the world in holding the Cooperative Week nor mark International Cooperatives Day on July 6, 2024.
The Ministry says unforeseen factors necessitated the postponement of this year’s celebrations in the country to July 20th. Consequently, the weeklong celebrations in the country will now take place from July 11 –20, 2024.
According to the Central Organising Committee, this year’s Coop Week promises an engaging lineup of activities. The week will commence with a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre in Kampala on July 11th. The schedule continues with interreligious prayers at Hotel Africana in Kampala on Monday, July 15th, followed by a community concern initiative launched at Buyoga Health Centre III on July 16th.
In addition, a nationwide blood donation campaign will kick off on Wednesday, July 17th, with activities extending to regional blood banks across the country.
A nationwide environmental conservation effort will be highlighted on Thursday, July 18th, featuring greening activities at UFCCS-MG offices in Mpigi and across the country. The day will also include the commissioning of the UFCC-MG offices and a road show covering Kibinge, Bukomansimbi, and Masaka City.
On July 19, a symposium will be held at the Marple Leaf Hotel in Masaka City. The day will also include the launch of an exhibition and a sports gala at Misanvu Church of Uganda Demonstration Grounds in Kibinge.
The grand finale on Saturday, July 20th, will feature Cooperative Day celebrations at Misanvu Church of Uganda Demonstration Grounds in Kibinge.
According to the International Cooperative Alliance, this year’s commemoration will centre on the theme, “Cooperatives Working Towards a Brighter Future for All”. Cooperatives will have the chance to highlight their past and present contributions towards creating a sustainable future, speeding up efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] by 2030. The theme resonates with the goals of the upcoming UN Summit on the Future, themed “Collaborative Solutions for a Better Tomorrow”.
This year’s celebration will be the 102nd International Cooperative Day and the 30th UN International Day of Cooperatives. This day will also build the momentum towards the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, which was declared by the UN last year.
Through #CoopsDay, local, national, and international policymakers, civil society organisations and the public in general can learn about the contribution of cooperatives to a just and sustainable future for all.
The aim of #CoopsDay is to increase awareness of cooperatives. The event underscores the contributions of the cooperative movement to resolving the major problems addressed by the United Nations and to strengthening and extending the partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors. Since 1995, the ICA and the United Nations, through the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives [COPAC], have jointly set the theme for the celebration of #CoopsDay.
