Ugandans mourn Ambassador Galiwango
MBALE-At about 7am on Monday, residents in the home village of Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Seychelles, Dr Hassan Galiwango, residents were in a somber mood following the news of his death.
After hearing the sad news, hundreds of people including Bugisu politicians and cultural leaders gathered in his compound wailing and consoling the family for the loss of their loved one.
The director of communications at the National Resistance [NRM] Secretariat, Emmanuel Dombo, described the late Galiwango, as a brilliant and balanced leader who contributed to the development of the area.
“He was a down-to-earth person to the level that he would drive himself to work. He was development-oriented and a peace-loving person. Bugisu sub-region and Uganda at large is going to miss him,” Dombo said.
Muhamood Masaba, the NRM chairperson Mbale District, described the late ambassador as a very principled, intelligent and committed NRM cadre.
Muhammad Mbogo, a resident and NRM cadre said: “The news of untimely death of one of our own and zealous NRM supporter has hit us at the hardest moment. He was developmental and never at any time involved himself in conflicts. He spoke and fulfilled his pledges. We shall miss him.’’
Hassan Magobe, another NRM cadre said: “We have lost an important and instrumental person in the politics of Bugisu region.
Galiwango died of heart failure on Monday morning at Nairobi Hospital where he had been admitted.
The late was the husband to Mbale City Woman Member of Parliament, Connie Nakayenze Galiwango, popularly known as ‘Mama Mbale’.
President Museveni appointed Galiwango as the Uganda’s High Commissioner to Kenya in October 2020.
Galiwango was also the former long serving director of finance and administration. at the NRM secretariat. He was replaced by Medina Naham, the NRM party chairperson of Koboko district.
The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among said the late Galiwango shall always be remembered for his dedicated service to his country.
“My Sincere condolences to you my sister Hon.Connie Galiwango and the family upon the demise of Ambassador Dr. Hassan Galiwango,”Among said.
Galiwango will be buried today (Tuesday) in Jami, Budaka district.
Bernard Osenda w’ Osenda, educationist said the late diplomat was celebrated teacher who was an icon of History paper 6,and NRM stalwart, and mobiliser , ambassador and diplomat.
“Galiwango was also Avery celebrated academia and a great lover of soccer, sports administrator and staunch Mbale Heroes supporter and manager. He qualified as a primary teacher. Later in his career he taught in mbale municipal schools before becoming an inspector of schools in kapchorwa district,” Osenda said.
He said the late later opted for further studies and sat for UACE and passed and went to Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) where he perused a degree of education majoring in History. Galiwango later perused a Masters degree in public administration and PHD in Mandela Metropolitan University.
“I met Galiwango in Mbale Central Academy where he was a classic and celebrated teacher of History paper 6 with a very beautiful handwriting and great command of the subject. He was a very kind and generous man,” he said.
He added that, “Galiwango helped to educate many children for free. In Galiwango we have lost a great teacher, staunch NRM cadre ,a prominent education manager, and a state diplomat.”
In 2000s Galiwango contested for MP Mbale Municipality [Now Mbale City]. Before this, he had served as 1st Division Chairperson Industrial Division and chairman Mbale Stadium.
