TZ: TCDC enters MoU with Tigo to provide payment services to cooperative farmers

DODOMA, February 8, 2024 – The Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission [TCDC] and telecom company Tigo have signed a memorandum of understanding [MoU] where cooperative farmers selling their produce will be paid through Tigo Pesa, a mobile money platform.

The agreement was signed recently in Tanzania’s capital city Dodoma where the Registrar of Cooperative Societies and the Chief Executive of TCDC, Dr. Benson Ndiege said cooperative members/ farmers should be able to get their money easily while selling their produce using the cooperative and warehouse Receipt system.

Ndiege explained that the signed MoU will enable Tigo to provide payment services to farmers while collaborating with TCDC, to implement government programmes geared towards uplifting the lives of the farmers in the country.

For his part, the Chief Executive Officer of Tigo, Angelica Peshawar said that the signed MoU is a continuation of the one that ended last year. He said the implementation of the first MoU was good and that this led to the signing of a new latest one.

“Let me continue to thank TCDC for continuing to believe in us and continue to work with us and we promise to come up with a new plan that will help the farmer to grow,” said Peshawar.

Meanwhile, crop cooperatives have been asked to ensure that they use digital scales in the sale of farmers’ produce during the season. This was stated by the Acting Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Consolata Kiluma, while opening a discussion session between TCDC, Central Cooperative Societies and CRDB Bank.

The Head of Young Business from CRDB Bank, Fadhiri Bushagama reminded the farmers of the existence of the IMBEJU Project where a farmer who is a member of the cooperative can get free-interest loans of up to Tshs 10 million.
