MWANZA, October 2, 2023 – Mwanza Regional Administrative Secretary, Elikana Balandya has called on Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs] to join the Union of Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies in Tanzania [SCCULT] in order to have a strong representation.
He made the call days ago during the peak of the week-long celebration of SACCOs in Mwanza region.
He urged the SACCO leaders to continue to publicise the good things that the Savings and Credit Union SCCULT has done for its members, adding that credible testimonies will motivate new members to join the union.
Balandya further explained that in order for SACCOs to become stronger and have a good direction, members should borrow and pay on time, saying it gives other members a chance to get credit services.
Speaking at the celebration, the chairman of the Tanzania Cooperative Development Commission [TCDC], Dr. Abdulmajid Nsekela said that improving SACCOs will contribute to the development of the country. Thus, he has asked the leaders and members to unite in strengthening the SACCOs.
On his part, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of TCDC, Dr. Benson Ndiege said SACCOs employed 13,677 people [both permanent and temporary] in 2022 compared to 13,496 in 2021.
“In addition, SACCOs have continued to care for the community by providing various social services based on the 7th principle where in 2022 a total of 438,409 Tanzanians got aid from SACCOs worth Tsh 635.38 million,” he said.
