Traders rush to import Brazilian coffee ahead of Trump’s 50 percent tariff
In a bid to avoid the steep tariff, some traders are rerouting vessels mid-journey, cancelling scheduled stops at other ports to prioritise delivery to U.S

NEW YORK — Commodities traders are scrambling to bring Brazilian coffee into the United States before a new 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods, announced by the Trump administration, takes effect on 1 August 2025. The move has already contributed to a rise in U.S. consumer prices recorded in June.
In a bid to avoid the steep tariff, some traders are rerouting vessels mid-journey, cancelling scheduled stops at other ports to prioritise delivery to U.S. ports before the deadline. Others are redirecting Brazil-origin coffee stockpiled in neighbouring countries such as Canada and Mexico into the U.S. market.
Importers based in the United States have begun listing wholesale prices that include the additional 50 percent charge for any shipment arriving after August 1, 2025. At present, there are no exemptions or workarounds for coffee that has not yet left Brazil.
Brazil is the source of around one-third of all coffee consumed in the U.S., both as a single-origin product and as a key component of blended varieties in the world’s largest coffee market.
Industry experts warn that, if enforced, the new tariff will trigger a wave of price increases. Brazilian coffee cooperative Expocacer, which boosted its exports to the U.S. by 15 percent last year, confirmed that contracts for shipments scheduled to arrive after August 1, 2025, cannot be renegotiated.
Traders anticipate a significant shift in global coffee flows if the tariff remains in place. Brazilian beans, they say, may increasingly be redirected to Europe and Asia, while U.S. buyers could turn to alternative suppliers in Africa, Central America, and South America.
