Tourism: New 2.6km road to improve access to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa district
According to Simon Kaita, Acting Chief Executive Officer of UTB, the road aims to boost tourism in the district by improving access to Sipi Falls, one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions and a significant source of foreign exchange

KAPCHORWA, May 2, 2025 – The Uganda Tourism Board [UTB] has officially launched a 2.6-kilometre tourism access road in the hilly Kapchorwa district, located in eastern Uganda.
The road, constructed in partnership with the Kapchorwa District Local Government, was inaugurated on Wednesday.
According to Simon Kaita, Acting Chief Executive Officer of UTB, the road aims to boost tourism in the district by improving access to Sipi Falls, one of Uganda’s most popular tourist attractions and a significant source of foreign exchange.
Kaita noted that inadequate road infrastructure had previously hindered tourists from reaching the site, prompting UTB to invest Shs 160 million in the project.
“We believe this road will increase tourist arrivals and benefit the community in several ways, including creating opportunities for local businesses and entrepreneurs,” said Kaita. “The new road will also enable farmers to transport their produce to markets more efficiently.”
He added that the road would improve access to essential services such as healthcare and education, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for local residents.
Kaita also revealed plans to establish a tourist information centre in Kapchorwa District to further enrich the visitor experience by providing insights into Sipi Falls and the surrounding area.
“The centre will showcase the rich cultural heritage of the local community and offer visitors a memorable experience,” he said.
Kapchorwa District LCV Chairperson, Evelyn Chebet, expressed her gratitude for the new road, noting its potential to transform the lives of local residents through increased tourism.
She encouraged communities along the road to take advantage of the development by boosting agricultural production, which she said would, in turn, raise household incomes.
Deputy Resident District Commissioner [RDC] for Kapchorwa, Martin Sakajja, also expressed his appreciation to UTB and the Kapchorwa District Local Government for their collaborative efforts in enhancing tourism infrastructure.
Sakajja underscored the importance of the road in promoting both tourism and economic development in the district.
“This new road will attract more tourists, boost local businesses, and improve livelihoods,” he said. “I thank the Uganda Tourism Board and the Kapchorwa District Local Government for their commitment to developing tourism infrastructure.”
Speaking at the same event, Charles Komakech, Chief Administrative Officer of Kapchorwa District, also commended UTB for partnering with the district leadership to construct the road, stating that it would help drive economic growth.
He added that UTB and the Kapchorwa District Local Government had signed a memorandum of understanding on August 23, 2023, comprising a commitment of Shs 500 million to fund the road construction, erecting a highway gantry billboard and signages, developing tourism trails and pedestrian bridges, establishing a tourism information centre, and constructing resting shelters and washroom facilities.
