Tororo SAGE beneficiaries receive cash

TORORO-The elderly in Tororo district benefiting from the Social Assistance Grant for Empowerment [SAGE] programme received their monthly stipend on Tuesday.

Every month government through SAGE programme gives Shs 25,000 to every Ugandan aged 80 years above.

Tororo district has at least 5,268 SAGE beneficiaries that face many vulnerabilities such as poverty, loneliness, and disease.

The deputy resident district commissioner of Tororo, Albert Amula who monitored the disbursement of the money to the beneficiries in the district said in the second quarter of the financial year 2022/ 2023, Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development [MGLSD] released over Shs 395 million for the SAGE beneficiaries in the district.

“The Government of Uganda through the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development together with development Partners is implementing the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment and today the team from the Ministry concluded the disbursement of the monies to the older persons in Tororo district,” Tamula said.

It aims to help tackle chronic poverty in Uganda and address the impact of poverty on social cohesion and the ability of chronically poor people to access healthcare, education and other key services.

“The older persons should utilise their grants to improve their livelihoods and they should avoid the temptations from the youth who will persuade them into wasteful expenditure,” he said.

He further said that the government announced a Shs 5 billion grant for elderly persons aged 60 to 79 years who are not beneficiaries of SAGE programme.

However, he urged members of the public and older persons to report to local leaders whenever an elderly person dies, saying it helps to clean up the SAGE register.

“The older persons should always report to their local leadership about the death of their colleagues to enable cleaning of the register for older persons,” he said.
