The Uhuru Institute calls for strong cooperatives in New Year’s message
KAMPALA, January 31, 2025 – The Uhuru Institute for Social Development [TUI] has called on cooperators in Uganda to build robust cooperatives that can effectively carry out their responsibilities while upholding core values such as self-help, self-responsibility, and the seven principles.
TUI, a social business enterprise supporting coops in Uganda and the rest of Africa, made the call in its New Year 2025 message to cooperators nationwide. “We must build strong cooperatives, ready to face these responsibilities with a sense of duty to our country, Uganda,“ the message reads in part.
In the written message, TUI highlights that the Government of Uganda is “investing trillions of shillings to support the growth of financial cooperatives, namely PDM SACCOs in all 10,594 parishes in Uganda, and Emyooga SACCOs in all constituencies.”
TUI further notes that Ugandan cooperatives have come a long way, from a time when few were aware of them, to the present day, when everyone agrees that “cooperatives are the way to go.”
The organisation also highlights the spread of cooperatives across the country and throughout various sectors of the economy. “Cooperatives are expanding in every corner of the country and all sectors of the economy, with more than 45,000 registered cooperatives and over 15 million members,” the message reads.
In closing, TUI, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in November last year, pledged to continue providing high-quality services through its various units Coop360 Network, Coop Profiler, SkillCoop, Think Tank, Fanaka Finance Limited, and theCooperator.
