Teso cultural leader urges subjects to embrace commercial farming

SOROTI – The Emorimor of Teso, Paul Sande Emolot has urged his subjects to embrace commercial farming in a bid to fight household poverty.

The Emorimor made the remarks on Friday during the first council meeting of the Iteso Cultural Union [ICU] that took place at his palace where he also inaugurated his cabinet

During the event, the Emorimor pledged to work closely with his ministers to bring back the glory of the Iteso and thanked the council for entrusting him with the cultural institution’s leadership.

He called upon the men and youth in the chiefdom to join women by engaging in productive activities to improve their household incomes.

The Emorimor in his speech further urged the elected cabinet and council to work together to establish sources of funds to run the operations of ICU.

Meanwhile, Gabriel Opolot, the newly elected Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries ICU, urged people to embrace cooperatives instead of despising them.

The Minister of Agriculture ICU, Jones Oluma Eceru, called for the restoration of the forest cover, saying more trees need to be planted.

“Families should encourage children to plant trees like oranges and mangoes in their homes so that in the future they don’t have to move around the neighbourhood looking for the fruits,” he said.

Eceru urged farmers to embrace the commercial growing of cassava, potatoes beans, and groundnuts because they require shorter time to mature.

He said that he was coordinating with farmers to see that they grow more cowpeas, beans for export at a better price to improve people’s livelihood.

“We can tap from the foreigners in terms of agriculture and they could buy our products at a better price,” Eceru said.
