Teso College Aloet to set up irrigation scheme to support learners

SOROTI, July 30, 2024 – The administrators of Teso College Aloet [TCA] plan to support learners in the new curriculum by setting up a small-scale irrigation scheme project on the school’s farm.

Prof. Godfrey Akileng, Chairman of the Finance Committee made this remark during the school’s 70th anniversary celebrations that took place on Saturday at the school premises.

He said that teaching agriculture and other subjects requires a lot of water, explaining that the current dry spell has affected food production in Teso Subregion.

Akileng said they have secured over 500 acres of land for crop, and livestock enterprises that will help students with their practical lessons in agriculture.

He acknowledged that currently the school has over 500,000 litres of water but aims to collect 800,000 litres per day to accommodate the irrigation scheme.

He encouraged the learners who leave the school to use the knowledge acquired in agriculture as a subject to improve their household incomes.

On his part, the headteacher Julius Opasso supported the idea of setting up an irrigation facility at the school, saying it would mitigate climate change as it will enable students to do their practical lessons in agriculture throughout the year .

“We shall be able to save a lot since the irrigation scheme will support learners especially those offering agriculture and biology,” Opasso said, adding that the learners will get practical skills that they can use even after leaving the school.
