Teachers’ SACCO boss remanded to Luzira over theft of Shs 1.35bln

The suspect identified as Nathan Twinomujuni, is charged with obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud the teachers’ SACCO

KAMPALA, August 21, 2025 — The Uganda Liberal Teachers’ Union Members SACCO Secretary, has been remanded to Luzira Prison until September 3, 2025, after being accused of conspiring to defraud over Shs 1.35 billion meant for teachers’ welfare.

The suspect identified as Nathan Twinomujuni, is charged with obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud the teachers’ SACCO.

Teacher Mujuni was arraigned before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court on Monday by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit [SHACU] working jointly with the Criminal Investigations Directorate [CID], and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions [ODPP].

According to SHACU, Twinomujuni, together with other SACCO leaders, diverted part of the Shs 20bln President Yoweri Museveni granted to teachers to improve their welfare following the Covid-19 pandemic, and enhancement of science teachers’ salaries.

“The SACCO Chairperson together with Twinomujuni Nathan embarked on various questionable activities including the purchase of land in Kiira Municipality at Shs1.3bln, the purchase of an unidentified 500 acres of land in Kabwoya, Kikuube district at Shs 2.75bln from Hansem Technical Services, and motor vehicles worth over Shs 250 million,” SHACU said in a statement.

Investigations reveal that on December 16, 2024, Shs 1.35BLn part of the Shs 2.75 billion for the Kikuube land was deposited into the account of businessman Esiingwa Hassan Maganda, Director of Hansem Technical Services Ltd.

Twinomujuni now joins his co-accused, Evans Mutesasira Kaganizo, the SACCO Chairperson, and Maganda, who are already facing related charges over the misappropriation of more than Shs 3.6bln.

SHACU emphasised that the teachers’ SACCO money was meant to uplift teachers, not enrich a few individuals.

“We remain resolute in pursuing individuals who misuse resources entrusted to them. The teachers’ SACCO money was intended to improve the livelihoods of teachers, not to enrich a few individuals,” SHACU explained.
