Teachers advised to shun multiple loans

MBALE – Teachers in Mbale district and Uganda at large have been urged to invest part of their earnings in productive activities other than continuously acquiring multiple loans from various financial institutions.

The call was made by the Mbale resident city commissioner, John Rex Achilla while addressing education stakeholders at Rosehood Hotel in Mbale City. He said the country is alarmed at the number of teachers being weighed down by multiple debts.

He said multiple loans cannot help teachers to develop, adding that his office has started sensitizing teachers about financial discipline and the dangers of borrowing multiple loans from various financial institutions in the country.

Achilla further encouraged teachers to work hard and stop depending on multiple loans, saying it is not good for them as salary earners.

Some teachers in various parts of the country have fled their homes and abandoned teaching dues to multiple loans from financial institutions and loan shacks.

He also advised them to develop a saving culture and form groups in SACCOs, saying they will be able to fight poverty among themselves and their households.

He further asked the teachers to acquire new skills and the right attitudes for the wholesome development of their lives and their families.
