Tanzania: Cooperative union launches cargo transport initiative

LIWALE, April 23, 2025 – The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Cooperative Development Commission of Tanzania, Dr Benson Ndiege, has officially launched seven cargo trucks owned by the RUNALI Cooperative Union, during the opening of the Union’s 8th Annual General Meeting held in Liwale District.

As part of the event, Ndiege also handed over three motorcycles to Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies [AMCOS] that had demonstrated excellence in timely payments to farmers. The motorcycles were awarded to Mbuyuni AMCOS in Liwale, Ruangwa AMCOS, and Mtua AMCOS in Nachingwea.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ndiege stressed the importance of cooperatives being able to tackle their challenges in a sustainable manner.

“Last year, RUNALI struggled to access agricultural inputs on time due to a shortage of transport. Today, we are witnessing the launch of these seven trucks, which will provide significant support to farmers,” said Ndiege.

He further noted that the trucks will not only enhance efficiency by transporting produce from Primary Cooperative Societies to the Union but will also serve as a new source of income, helping to reduce dependence solely on levies.

On his part, Odas Mpunga, Chairperson of the RUNALI Cooperative Union, announced that the Union was planning to expand its commercial operations by constructing a large hotel in Liwale district. The initiative is intended to diversify the Union’s revenue streams.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of Liwale District Council, Mohammed Mtesa, highlighted the vital role of cooperatives in uniting communities, stressing that members have a duty to uphold solidarity and avoid division.

He praised the RUNALI board’s efforts in ensuring timely delivery of agricultural inputs and prompt payments to farmers.

“Their commitment deserves recognition,” he said. “The planned hotel construction will also help address the district’s shortage of accommodation facilities.”
