Excitement in Alebtong as construction of Shs 2.5bln secondary school is launched

ALEBTONG – Residents of Adwir Sub-county in Alebtong district are excited that learners in the area will no longer have to walk long distances in search of secondary education following the launch of the construction of a seed secondary school worth about Shs 2.5 billion.

The Adwir residents said the school, when completed, will not only boost education in the area but also contribute to the development of other sectors like agriculture and trade, since the school will provide market for foodstuffs and other items that they can supply. 

Meanwhile, Paddy Francis Ogwang Abwang, the Adwir Sub-county LCII chairman said lack of a secondary school in the area has contributed to child marriages and early pregnancies as some learners, especially girls who complete primary education, fail to join secondary education.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the seed secondary school took place on Saturday, presided over by the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua.

The school project is being implemented under Uganda Intergovernmental Fiscal Transfers [UIGFT] Programme funded by the World Bank.

UIGFT’s objective is to improve the adequacy, equity and effectiveness of financing and the oversight, management and delivery of local government services in education, health, water and environment, and micro irrigation, including refugees and their host communities.

Akol Holding Limited is undertaking the construction that will see the school completed in three phases, according to the acting district engineer, David Puce.

The scope of work in the first phase, according to Puce, includes the construction of two classroom blocks, and latrines for both learners and staff.

Phase II and III will see the construction of administration block, ICT block, science laboratory, multipurpose hall, three units of staff houses, a kitchen, and a playground.

The district LC5 chairman, David Kennedy Odongo commended the Ministry of Education and Sports for its decision to establish a secondary school in Adwir Sub-county, saying a number of sub-counties in the district still lack secondary schools.
