UPDF, Chinese start manufacturing automobile filters in Mbale Industrial Park

MBALE CITY, February 10, 2024 – The National Enterprise Cooperation [NEC], the investment arm of the Uganda People’s Defence Force [UPDF], and Chinese company WATU-China have commissioned a plant in Sino-Uganda Mbale Industrial Park to manufacture all kinds of automobile filters.

Officials said the project based in Mbale City is a joint venture between the government of Uganda under UPDF and the Chinese company. They added factory intends to make all types of automobile filters such as cabin filters, oil filters, fuel filters, and air filters.

Speaking during the launch of the plant, NEC Managing Director, Lt Gen. James Mugira, said Uganda is gaining strength in automobile technology. “Today Uganda has commissioned the first filter factory in the country,” Mugira said.

Mugira said factory intends to make over 1,500,000 filters annually, adding that car owners should expect quality products.

WATU- China Chairman, Liu Qingshan pledged to use his 40 years’ experience in the automobile Industry to benefit Ugandans.

Presiding over the commissioning, the State Minister for Defence, Jacob Markson Oboth hailed the Chinese company for the cooperation, saying the project comes with knowledge transfer to Ugandans.

Oboth advised the Chinese to invest more in Uganda, saying more opportunities exist. He  urged Ugandans to embrace Buy Uganda Build Uganda policy which promotes consumption of industrial products produced in Uganda.

Sino Uganda- Mbale Industrial Park intends to create more than 10,000 jobs, according to its Chairperson, Paul Zhang.

Established on 619 acres in Mbale City by Tian Tang Group, the industrial park was commissioned in 2018 by President Museveni as part of government efforts to drive industrialisation and job creation.

The park is a home to producers of various items such as LED bulbs, solar panels, electric kettles, Grace mattresses, play mats, bed covers, bed sheets, socks, baby diapers, sole tapes, Woolen blankets, woofers, assembled flat TV sets, washing detergents, and electric cables among others.
