Excitement as Kwania residents get water project

KWANIA-Residents in Aornga parish in Nambieso Sub-county, Kwania district have a reason to smile after the launch of a new project to provide safe and clean water, after battling a severe water crisis for about 20 years.

The Shs 240 million water project is being implemented by Seacious Construction Company Limited with funding from the Islamic Development Bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Environment.

The project codenamed “Water for Production”  will be executed in three months and is expected to serve more than 3,000 people in the villages of Awaldek, Teoriang, Akaidebe, Aburu, Ilera, Abura and Itekiber trading centers all in Aornga parish, Nambieso Sub-county.

Odongo Edward Eyak, Kwania district engineer says that each household is expected to contribute Shs 50, 000 for connection and maintenance of the project.

“Water will be connected to Nambieso Health Center III and Itekober Primary School. Later on, water shall be extended to other water-stressed areas within the Sub-county. For individual use, a fee of Shs 50,000 shall be charged for connection and maintenance.” he said.

Grace Angura, a resident of Awaldek village said the development has been long overdue.

“We had no safe and clean water in our area and we had been in terrible situations, waiting for the development. I am now very excited and I thank government for the rescue,” she said.

Marry Acan, a mother of eight said the water source would also reduce the outbreak of diseases.

“Our area has for decades gone without safe water sources putting our lives at risk. We have suffered enough from water-borne diseases because of drinking unsafe water,” she said in a telephone interview on Monday.

Kwania district water officer, Tom Edward Aguma says water coverage in the district stands at about 70 percent.

Ambrose Okori, the Nambieso Sub County LCIII Chairman, said: “It’s a relief, especially for women, who have been suffering to access safe and clean water.”

“Aornga has been sharing contaminated water sources with animals for about 20 years ago but with the installation of piped water, I believe the health and sanitation standards of our people will now improve,” he added.
