Suspected ADF rebels threaten to attack tea companies in Kabarole

KABAROLE – Security operatives in Kabarole district are on the high alert after suspected Allied Democratic Forces [ ADF] rebels last week dropped leaflets in Kyamara, Busoro Sub-county, threatening to attack tea plantations.

The leaflets were written in Kiswahili,  the language that most rebels in the East African Community [EAC] use.

The leaflets show the suspected ADF rebels had plans to attack Mpanga Tea Factory, Tamteco  Tea company, Kaswa trading centre, and Kyamara Primary School all in Busoro Sub-county, Kabarole district.

During the security meeting at Busoro Sub-county headquarters on Monday, the Kabarole resident district commissioner, Festus Bandeeba directed tea companies to form security committees and intensify intelligence in their factories.

“We call upon the general public to be calm and village leaders should be vigilant to build a strong information network at village level,” Bandeeba said.

He said all security systems are on the ground to avert any possible situation.

“Our security intelligence teams are on high alert to detect and react to anything as the need arises. Rapid response unit has been set by UPDF to respond in case of anything like suspected rebel or attack,” he said.

The Kabarole district LCV chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga said as district authorities, they have reinstated all village security committees as a short-term response to the insecurity threats by the suspected ADF rebels.

He said the village security committees are meant to facilitate the coordination and communication strategies.

“The general public should be able to as fast as possible share any insecurity information with any member of the village committee,” he said.

The threat comes at a time when citizens in the Rwenzori Sub region are still mourning the death of 43 people who were recently killed as the ADF rebels attacked Lhubiliha Secondary School in Kasese district. This has caused panic in the region and the country at large.
