OSAKA, October 11, 2025 — Italian cooperative federation Legacoop recently hosted an event at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, to showcase how cooperatives are building a better world. A stand was also dedicated to the International Year of Cooperatives.
Themed Designing Future Society for Our Lives, Expo 2025 in Osaka brought together people and innovations from around the world in an effort to address issues facing humankind on a global scale.
Held in the Italian Pavilion of Expo 2025, the Legacoop event aimed to raise awareness about the 2025 UN International Year of Cooperatives. With over 100,000 visitors a week, the Italian pavilion, one of the most visited at the expo. Italian cooperatives were joined in their celebration by representatives from the Japanese Cooperative Alliance.
The event featured speeches by Simone Gamberini, President of Legacoop; Toru Nakaya, Board Member of Japan Cooperative Alliance [JCA] and the International Cooperative Alliance [ICA]; Michele De Pascale, President of the Italian Region of Emilia-Romagna; Attilio Dadda, Vice-President of Legacoop and ICA Board Member; and Mario Vattani, Ambassador and Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2025 Osaka.
Participants also heard from ICA President Ariel Guarco and Head of ILO COOP/SSE Unit and Chair of UNTFSSE, Simel Esim. The event was an opportunity to showcase the impact Japanese and Italian cooperatives have in their local communities.
ILO Cooperative, Social and Solidarity Economy’s Esim highlighted cooperatives’ role in building inclusive, democratic, and sustainable futures.
The programme featured case studies from Italian and Japanese cooperatives, showcasing shared solutions across sectors. The session was closed by Attilio Dadda, Legacoop Vice President & ICA Board Member.
