Kole: Stakeholders urged to help in provision of clean water

KOLE– Kole district acting water officer, Patrick Ocen has called upon the development partners to assist the district in funding the provision of clean and safe water to the residents.

“We still have a lot of villages which are still not yet attended to and as a district, we are facing a resource gap to provide water,” Ocen said.

He was speaking days ago in Kole district at a function where JF Wells Works Africa, a charity founded by John Foley in California, handed over 89 boreholes worth Shs 300 million to residents of Alito and Okwerodot sub counties.

Ocen said the persistent shortage of water in the district during the dry season is a result of the encroachment on the wetlands through the cultivation and erection of structures such as houses.

“Most of the springs constructed in Kole district between 2010-2012 got dried up and people are facing a lot of challenges in getting water for domestic use,” he said.

He said in the coming financial year, 2022/2023, Kole district local government will drill 10 boreholes as it looks forward to achieving 100 percent water coverage.

The Alito LC3 chairperson, Tom Olet said the sub-county still has 48 villages without clean and safe water.

“People are walking far distance to fetch water and is causing domestic wrangles,” he said.

“I even wrote a letter requesting them to come back and help us with these 48 villages but till now I have not got any feedback,” he added.

Joseph Otim, a resident of Adokingeo village said due to lack of water sources, they were sharing the only spring in the area with animals, which puts locals at a high risk of contracting waterborne diseases.

Denis Ogwok another resident, urged the government to focus more on drilling boreholes and provide protected wells.
