Soroti Diocese to establish youth SACCO
SOROTI-The diocesan secretary Soroti Diocese, Rev.Samuel Ediau, has said the diocese is in advanced plans to establish a youth SACCO, having received seed capital of Shs 10 million from Vice President Jessica Alupo.
Ediau said this during the annual youth conference at Bethany Girls Secondary School, where over 6,000 youth convened from Teso Sub-region for one week.
He noted that the formation of the SACCO will enable youth to engage in income-generating activities using the entrepreneurship skills they acquired during the conference.
Ediau further encouraged the youth to take advantage of the SACCO once it is formed in order to fight poverty in their communities and Teso Sub-region as a whole.
“We are yet to form a SACCO and I encourage the youth to come and join,” the clergyman said.
“They can borrow money and begin businesses to generate incomes for their households,” he said.
He also requested the vice president for tractors which he said can help the youth to practice commercial farming on church land.
“At least each archdeaconry in Teso should have a tractor so that land can be utilised by the youth,” Ediau added.
Rev. James Opio, the diocesan youth and children’s coordinator said they want to help the young persons to be job creators rather than seekers of white-collar jobs.
He advised the youth who attended the conference to lead by example by practicing what they learnt during the conference to fight poverty.
However, Vice President Alupo urged the youth to be humble, respectful, responsible, and God-fearing if they are to prosper.
Alupo thanked the Anglican Church, especially for such a great conference that gathered young people from Teso Sub-region and neighbouring areas to discuss issues concerning their faith and development of the country.
She said the youth have immense potential to contribute to national development once they are healthy, educated, skilled, and have a positive attitude toward work.
