Soroti City set to construct a modern abattoir

SOROTI, April 14, 2025 – Soroti City is set to commence the construction of a modern abattoir, aimed at improving meat safety and public health.

Dr. William Blarter Sendawula, Senior Veterinary Officer in charge of Veterinary Public Health at the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries [MAAIF], made the announcement during an inception meeting held at Soroti City Hall on Wednesday.

According to Sendawula, the proposed facility will offer a controlled environment for the slaughter, inspection, and handling of meat, thereby reducing the risk of contamination and the spread of zoonotic diseases.

“The abattoir will become the primary source of meat for Soroti City and its surrounding areas, significantly minimising the consumption of unsafe meat, which poses serious health risks to consumers,” he said.

The project is part of a wider initiative funded by the World Bank and implemented in several cities across the country, with Hoima City, and Kampala being supported to have new abattoirs.

Sendawula urged residents of Soroti City to support the project, noting that existing slaughterhouses do not meet the required standards of a modern abattoir.

He added that the new facility will also enable the productive use of animal waste as organic manure, which will boost agricultural productivity.

Dr Emmanuel Kotol, Senior Veterinary Officer for Soroti City, highlighted the poor condition of the current facility. “We have an old slaughter slab that is in a dilapidated state but could be upgraded to meet the necessary standards,” he said.

He reported a decline in the number of animals being processed, with the current facility slaughtering eight cows and 20 goats daily, down from 14 cows and 25 goats previously.

Simon Okiring, Secretary for Works and Production in Soroti City, confirmed that 2.6 acres of land have been secured for the construction of the new abattoir. He noted that the project is also expected to create employment opportunities for local residents.
