Sigh of relief as residents in Namisindwa finally get clean water

NAMISINDWA, September 20, 2023 – Residents of Namisindwa district in Eastern Uganda have a reason to smile as they now have access to clean water. This is after a gravity flow water project worth Shs 200 million was commissioned and handed over to the district.

The clean water project will serve residents in Bukiabi Sub-county,  Bumbo town council, Bumwoni Sub-county, Bumbo Sub-county, and Magale town council,  all found in Namisindwa district.

The gravity flow water system that uses solar energy to pump water into people’s homes was donated by Sana Project, a non-governmental organisation operating in Teso Su-region in Eastern Uganda. The clean water project was lobbied by John Musila, the Member of Parliament for Bubulo East Constituency.

While speaking at Bumbo town council during the hand over of the project to the district leadership, MP Musila said people in the area have been drinking contaminated water from unprotected sources.

He said contaminated water has increased waterborne diseases such as typhoid, dysentery, and diarrhea among others.

The MP also said residents, especially children and women have been moving over five kilometres to access water for domestic use.

“Moving long distances to get clean water has increased problems in people’s homes such as domestic violence where husbands beat their wives for delaying to come back from the distant wells,” he said.

Jackson Wakwaika, the LCV chairperson of Namisindwa district welcomed the water project and urged the community to handle its project with care.

He said Namisindwa district extended clean water to some sub-counties in the last financial year 2022/2023.

MWakwaika urged other development partners to support his district leadership in providing clean water to its residents.

Suzan Matenyo, a resident of  Bumbo town council, expressed happiness, saying waterborne diseases will be avoided now that the area has a clean water source.
