Shs116b Lira-Kamdini road construction launched

LIRA – The government has launched the reconstruction of Lira –Kamdini road which covers 75km stretch in the three districts of the Lango sub region.

State Minister for Works and Transport, Musa Ecweru launched the upgrading of the road worth Shs116b at Baramindyang primary school, Ayer sub county, Kole district on 21st April,2022.

Mota-Engil Africa, an international company from Portugal will undertake the civil work and the project is scheduled to run for 36 months according to officials from the Ministry of Works and Transports. The World Bank is co-financing the project.

The objective of the road is to reduce transport cost, enhance road safety and to improve and preserve road asserts according to the Director of Planning and Engineering in the work’s ministry, Isaac Wani.

Wani says the project is in addition to other undergoing upgrades by Uganda National Roads Authority [UNRA] and development partner in line with NRM manifesto and national development plan III.

Two months ago, a section of legislators and the communities in the sub region held a mini demonstration over the appalling state of the road.

It attracted attention of President Museveni who later met Lango leaders at Alidi primary school in Oyam district.

The President pledged to consider suspending the World Bank from funding the projects and government takes over since the bank is over delay.

Other roads which should also be worked on according to MP Judith Alyek include; Dokolo-Namasale-Ochero, Lira-Aloi-Abim, and Ayer-Corner- Aboke and Iceme- Ngai to Bobi measuring 55km.

Wana also says, the roads currently undergoing upgrades in the sub region include Rwekunye-Apac [90km], Apac-Lira –Puranga [100km] among others.

He says Uganda road networks has improved due to increase funding compared to the pre 1986 situation when a number of roads in the country was impassable.

“Since 1986 a total of about 4793km new roads have been reconstructed and a total of 1094 dilapidated roads have been worked on,” he says.

Minister Ecweru says, the community using the road suffered and were running out of patience.

He adds that the government is committed to accomplish the project to enhance market for the produce.
