Shs 435bln project to create 12,000 jobs in Uganda

LIRA– A new government project to enhance technological skills in the young people is to begin soon and is expected to create 12,000 job opportunities in Uganda.

The project, ‘National Science, Technology, Engineering and Innovation Skills Enhancement Project [NSTEI-SEP]’ will increase active participation in national infrastructure development and manufacturing industries.

Jossy Muhangi, the Communication and Outreach Officer Uganda National Council of Science and Technology [UNCST], said a five-year project will cost Shs h435bln of which Shs 295bln is a loan provided by the Chinese government.

“The project will enhance the technological skills base, especially the youth who are out of school, graduates, craftsmen, technicians, and engineers,” he said Wednesday during a media dialogue in Lira City.

“There is a need for them to participate in strategic national infrastructural projects and manufacturing industries,” he added.

Dr. Martin Patrick Ongol, the Executive Secretary of UNCST said the project addresses a pressing need to help build Uganda`s science and technology and human capital needed to foster socio-economic development.

“The project will ultimately empower Ugandans with the capacity to design, implement, and manage national infrastructure,” he said.

“At the same time supporting Uganda scientists and innovators to commercialize viable research and development outputs,” he added.

He added that the project is putting up an innovation centre for science, technology and engineering at Rwebitete in Kiruhura district.

Under the project, according to Ongol, a technology innovation and business incubation centre will be established in Kampala Industrial Business Park and Namanve in Mukono.

According to the government, this investment is in line with the vision 2040 agenda of setting up science and technology parks, engineering centres and business incubation centres.
