Shs 3.59bln modern school handed over to Kapchorwa district officials

The handover ceremony, held recently on the school premises in Kaptanya Subcounty, was attended by Kapchorwa district officials, community leaders, parents, and students

KAPCHORWA, June 25, 2025 –– In a major boost to education infrastructure in the Sebei sub-region, BAM Contractors and Surveyors has officially handed over the Shs 3.59 billion Kaptanya Seed Secondary School to Kapchorwa district officials.

The fully furnished school, a key milestone under government’s commitment to improving access to quality education in underserved rural areas, marks the completion of an extensive construction project aimed at transforming the learning environment for students in Kaptanya and the surrounding communities.

The handover ceremony, held recently on the school premises in Kaptanya Subcounty, was attended by Kapchorwa district officials, community leaders, parents, and students.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Assistant Resident District Commissioner Kapchorwa, Abubakar Chemonges hailed the project as a beacon of transformation for Sebei Subregion.

“This project is not just a collection of buildings; it is a statement of the government’s commitment to inclusive education. No child in Kaptanya should be left behind because of distance or poor facilities. As the RDC’s office, we shall ensure this school becomes a model of discipline, academic excellence, and patriotism,” said Chemonges.

The Kapchorwa district LCV Vice Chairperson FridaYeko echoed similar sentiments, applauding the central government and development partners for the timely and strategic investment.

“We are deeply grateful for this development for Kaptanya and the entire Sebei region. As women leaders, we are particularly pleased with the provision of separate and hygienic latrines for girls, this addresses one of the major barriers to girls’ education,” she said, drawing applause from parents and students.

District Education Officer Kapchorwa, Owen Chebet Kweko emphasised the direct impact the new infrastructure will have on learning outcomes.

“Previously, students studied in borrowed spaces, with no laboratories or library. We now have the tools to deliver holistic education. Our next focus is improving learner attendance and performance tracking. We shall also collaborate with the Ministry of Education and Sports to deploy more teachers and learning materials,” said Chebet.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Kapchorwa, Stephen Lokope, representing the district’s technical arm, commended BAM Contractors for delivering the project on time and to standard.

“This project has passed all technical assessments and meets national education infrastructure standards. It’s now up to the school management and community to safeguard these assets. We urge parents to support school activities and ensure regular attendance,” Lokope stated.

Project scope and facilities

The project includes: 3 classroom blocks [6 classrooms in total]; 1 block with two science laboratories [Physics and Chemistry]; an administration block with offices for the headteacher, deputy headteacher, and a staff room with lockable drawers; an ICT and library block; 3 blocks of two-unit staff houses; 3 blocks of two-stance latrines

Others included in the project are; separate five-stance latrines for boys and girls; a multipurpose hall for assemblies, exams, and community events; a levelled playground with goalposts; tree planting around the school compound; full furnishing of classrooms, laboratories, offices, and staff areas

A new dawn for Kaptanya

The Headteacher, Chebet Jackson, revealed that the school has already seen a 30% increase in enrolment since the completion of the facility.

“With modern facilities, we expect improved academic performance and increased student motivation. We now call upon the community to help us maintain this valuable institution,” he said.

Parents, many of whom previously sent their children to distant schools, were visibly emotional.

“I never thought my daughter would study in a school with computers and a science lab,” said Mercy Chelangat, a mother of three. “Now she can walk to school and learn in a safe environment.”

Looking ahead

The ceremony concluded with a symbolic tree planting by district leaders and a guided tour of the newly constructed facilities. The school is expected to begin full academic operations in the upcoming term.

Kaptanya Seed Secondary School now stands not only as an educational institution, but as a symbol of transformation, where the aspirations of rural learners can take root and flourish.
