Serere fish farmers ask for feed processing plant

SERERE– Serere District Fish farmers Association [SEDFFA] has asked government to support them with a fish feed processing facility, saying the current prices of fish feeds are high for them to afford.

SEDFFA, an association with about 500 fish farmers with over 1,800 fish ponds is experiencing lack of fish feeds.

Director SEDFFA, Denis Eguyu, expects that once farmers are supported with fish feeds processing plant, they will be able to put more fish on the market.

“We will be able to produce enough feeds that match the number of fish in the ponds,” Eguyu said.

He also says a hatchery would also help the farmers to get quality fish that are adaptable to the conditions in the ponds.

Florence Adongo, treasurer SEDFFA, and a retired policewoman encouraged those who have retired to remain active by engaging in income-generating activities like fish farming.

Adongo urged farmers to grow plants that are used as fish feeds so that they boost the quality of their fish.

“We want quality fish and therefore we should grow food that is best for good growth of our fish,” she said.

Martin Eyalu, the vice chairperson of the fish association said farmers face the challenge of poor fish breeds and the high cost of fish feeds.

He however appealed to government to support their association, saying fish farming has the potential to improve the well-being of households.
