Senior cleric urges Tooro kingdom subjects to live in peace and harmony

KABAROLE-Religious subjects in Tooro Kingdom have been asked to desist from spreading divisionism but rather live in peace and harmony to bolster the kingdom’s development.

While preaching at the thanksgiving service on Monday to mark King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV’s 27th coronation anniversary at Karuziika palace in Fort Portal city, the bishop of Ruwenzori diocese, Reuben Kisembo said it was a shame that some of the kingdom’s subjects continue to criticise their king after appointing Steven Kiyingi as the kingdom’s prime minister.

The subjects opposing the king say the light-skinned Kiyingi is not a true Mutooro and on this argument, the bishop said: “Stop ashaming our Kingdom and the King. Let’s leave the defiance issues and respect our king. Let’s be good subjects who respect our King. I heard that a section of subjects wants to take the king to court and others have shunned the celebrations. That’s disrespect of the highest order.”

Kisembo appealed to those planning to lodge a civil suit against their king to stop, urging them to respect his decision of appointing a non-Mutooro prime minister. He said the king needs to be respected, the bishop continuing that those disrespecting the king are bad subjects.

“For our kingdom to move forward we don’t need to engage ourselves in such issues of suing the king, rejecting the prime minister, issues of boycotting the Kingdom among others, these will take our Kingdom backward,” he said.

He however called upon Tooro Kingdom officials to review the kingdom’s constitution to avoid misunderstandings and misquoting it.

He called upon the king to marry. “You are now old enough to have someone by your side and I pray that by the next anniversary, we will celebrate it when you are two,” Kisembo requested the king.

Bishop Kisembo also talked about the rise in HIV/AIDS infections in Tooro Kingdom, appealing to the public to safeguard their lives by avoiding bad acts and bad groups.

The HIV prevalence rate in Kabarole where the Kingdom is headquartered is at 14.6 percent, which he said is so alarming, making the district second after Kalangala district which ranks first at 18 percent, way above the national rate of 5.5 percent.

“This HIV prevalence rate is a shame to us as the people of Tooro. Let’s do something to avoid more infections,” the bishop said.

King Oyo is the UN AIDS ambassador in the fight against HIV and he has on several occasions appealed to the people of Tooro and the general public to prevent the spread of the virus by abstaining from sex and using preventive measures.

Today, King Oyo is celebrating his 27th coronation anniversary and the function is at Karuziika palace in Fort Portal city.

Oyo ascended to the throne on September 12, 1995, aged three years after the death of his father making him the youngest monarch in the whole world.

On the same day, Tooro Kingdom is celebrating 200 years of existence.

This year’s coronation anniversary theme is Tooro at 200.

The minister of finance, Matia Kasaija was the chief guest who represented President  Yoweri Museveni.
