Registrar Orders SGM for Moyo SACCO Amid Governance Dispute

The directive follows a petition filed by the SACCO Board Chairperson, Simon Peter Anyanzo, who is challenging the vetting committee’s appointment of two board members. He claims the individuals do not meet the required academic qualifications

MOYO, July 3, 2026 — The Registrar of Cooperative Societies in the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives [MTIC], Robert Bariyo Barigye, has directed that a Special General Meeting [SGM] of Moyo Cooperative Savings and Credit Society Ltd [Moyo SACCO] be convened immediately to address a governance dispute within the institution.

The directive follows a petition filed by the SACCO Board Chairperson, Simon Peter Anyanzo, who is challenging the vetting committee’s appointment of two board members. He claims the individuals do not meet the required academic qualifications.

Anyanzo specifically raised concerns about Abdul Nasur Majid, whom he described as underqualified, and another appointee, Water Draciri, whom he also said lacks the requisite academic credentials.

He further alleged that Majid, a former civil servant in Obongi District Local Government, was previously investigated by the Inspectorate of Government [IGG], which reportedly found that he held a fake degree and recommended his dismissal from public service. Majid had recently been interdicted from his position as a parish chief in Obongi District Local Government.

Anyanzo also questioned Majid’s appointment as Acting Chairperson of Moyo SACCO, arguing that it was inappropriate given the alleged concerns over his qualifications.

In response to the dispute, Barigye has scheduled a Special General Meeting for tomorrow, Saturday, at Moyo People’s Hall in Moyo district to resolve the matter.

According to an official notice seen by this publication, the meeting will begin at 10:00 a.m. and is convened under Regulation 21(4) of the Cooperative Societies Regulations, 1992.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives notice states that only verified delegates will be allowed to attend, and members must present valid national identification documents.

The meeting comes amid growing tension within the SACCO over board appointments and allegations surrounding the academic qualifications of some newly appointed members.
