TORORO – The resident district commissioner of Tororo, Nixon Owole, has appealed to local communities and other stakeholders in the district to be vigilant and contribute towards the fight against corruption.
He encouraged the local communities to be directly involved in the monitoring of government programmes in their areas in order to ensure effective service delivery.
He made the remarks on Thursday during an engagement with key stakeholders in Tororo district at Tororo Municipal Council.
The meeting was organised by the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity in the Office of the President to assess the level of implementation of the zero-tolerance to corruption policy.
The engagement aimed at sharing experiences and ascertaining the level of implementation for the anti-corruption agenda and documenting local efforts to curb corruption and improve work ethics in Tororo district.
Owole said such engagements are important in in strengthening the fight against corruption in the country.
He further urged communities and other stakeholders in Tororo district to support government in the implementation of the Parish development Model [PDM] so that the targeted beneficiaries of the programme fight poverty in their households through commercial production.
The Bishop of Bukedi Diocese, Rt.Rev. Samuel Egesa reiterated the need to instil morals in the duty bearers if corruption is to be defeated in the country.
Officials from the Directorate of Ethics and Integrity noted that corruption exists in all sectors of the country and manifests itself in all forms which adversely affects service delivery and urged stakeholders to join in the fight against the vice.
They reiterated the commitment of government in fighting corruption through strengthening policy and legal frameworks, continuous building capacity of anti-corruption agencies, and strengthening coordination amongst agencies among others.
However, some residents in Tororo district during the Thursday engagement urged government to improve its efforts geared towards fighting corruption.
Lilian Akullo, a human rights activist, said much as government has tried to fight corruption, more still remains to be done to suppress the vice.
He stated that government needs to enhance the remuneration of prosecutors and other law enforcement officers if they are to help fight corruption, adding that fighting the vice has merely become a song on the side of government.
