Premier urges the public to plant palm trees to increase palm oil production

KABAROLE – The Ugandan Prime Minister Robbinah Nabbanja has urged the general public to plant more palm trees to increase on the production of palm oil in the country.

Nabbanja said prices of commodities have increased because most of the raw materials are imported from other countries.

She was replying to the Kabarole district Chairperson’s call on government for help over the rise of prices of different commodities in the country.

She was speaking at Kaboyo Secondary School in Kabarole district during the district’s celebrations to commemorate international women’s day that was officially held on March 8th,2022.

Nabbanja said this financial year, they have not increased taxes on goods because it would become worse.

“As a country, we don’t have the capacity to produce raw materials for making some of these commodities because most of them, like soap, use palm oil and what we produce as a country is not enough” she noted.

She said a short-term solution for the rise of commodity prices including food stuff is investing more in farming and have a lot of food both for consumption and for sale.

“You are blessed here because you can now take your produce to Democratic Republic of Congo which recently joined the East African Community. Let’s have enough food production and take advantage of the rise in commodity prices” she added.

Nabbanja gave an example of the price of posho that increased, explaining that those with maize can now earn good money.

She encouraged the public to use this chance for those with an opportunity and gain from it especially for the agricultural produce.

Prices of commodities country wide have increased including fuel. This has left all Ugandans in a worry which they say if nothing is done only God will save them.

Some of the commodities whose prices have increased include soap which used to be bought between Shs 2000 to Shs 5000 a bar but now goes for between Shs 5000 to Shs 15,000.

Price of fuel used to cost between Shs 3000 to Shs 5000 a litre, now goes for between Shs 5000 to Shs 15,000 a litre.

Parish Development Model

Nabbanja appealed to the public to embrace the Parish Development Model to get out of poverty by improving their household income.

She said the parish development model is one of the best government programmes because it is implemented at the grass root level that is the parish level.

“Most of the government programmes have been implemented at government level and ‘omuntu wa wansi’ has not been benefiting much and this is why the president decided to use this approach” she said.

She said those who did not benefit in Emyooga programme, this is their chance but they need to have an active Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies [SACCOs] at parish level.

“Ensure you have a parish model committee at every parish and active SACCO otherwise money will be taken back. This is an opportunity for you and if you don’t work hard, you will not benefit” she said.

This financial year, Shs 17m has been disbursed for each parish and starting the next financial year, each parish will receive Shs 100m.
