Police probe fire outbreak at Mbale Industrial Park

MBALE – Police in Mbale City are investigating the cause of a fire that on Tuesday night gutted Grace Foam Factory at Mbale Sino Industrial Park in Mbale city, destroying property worth millions of shillings.

Police Fire Brigade could not save the factory as it had already been razed down, but they managed to prevent its spread to other factories.

The Elgon regional police spokesperson, Rogers Taitika, told this reporter that a team of detectives was still trying to establish the cause of the fire that left property worth millions of shillings destroyed.

“This factory caught fire but all I want to assure the people now is that there’s no cause for alarm. It’s under control,” Taitika said.

Preliminary investigations by the police fire and rescue department indicate that the gas cylinder exploded, triggering the massive fire outbreak.

He explained that the fire destroyed machines for producing mattresses and products that were ready for market.

Taitika, however, said that no person died apart from one factory worker who sustained minor injuries and is receiving treatment at Mbale regional referral hospital.

Mbale resident city commissioner, Rex Achilla, said the cause of the fire has not been established.

He advised the industrial park management to install a firefighting system to curb future incidents.

However, there have been several such fires before but police reports are rarely or never made public after investigations promising investigations.
