Police issue security and safety guidelines ahead of Martyrs’ Day celebrations
Observed annually, Martyrs’ Day is one of Uganda’s most significant religious events, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country and neighbouring countriess

KAMPALA, May 13, 2025 –– The Uganda Police Force has issued a comprehensive security advisory ahead of this year’s Martyrs’ Day celebrations, scheduled for June 3, urging the public to remain vigilant as thousands of pilgrims prepare to travel to Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine in Wakiso district.
Observed annually, Martyrs’ Day is one of Uganda’s most significant religious events, drawing tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country and neighbouring nations. Many undertake the journey to Namugongo on foot, making stopovers at churches, schools, and community centres along the way.
The Uganda Police highlighted on its website that the commemorations involve more than just a single-day event. A series of activities precede the main celebration, attracting both local and international pilgrims, as well as economic activity from vendors, transport operators, and other service providers.
“This large gathering, while spiritually enriching, also presents security challenges,” said the police in a statement released on Monday. “Such events often attract individuals with criminal intent. We urge all participants to remain alert and cooperate with security personnel throughout the celebrations.”
Traffic diversions and crowd safety
Traffic congestion is expected in and around Namugongo during the pilgrimage period. Police have announced that traffic diversions will be implemented and urged road users to be patient and considerate.
“We appeal to motorists to drive cautiously and give way to foot pilgrims. Pilgrims, too, should exercise vigilance, especially in areas with heavy traffic,” the statement added.
Parents and guardians were particularly advised to keep a close eye on children, as there have been past instances of minors getting lost in the crowds.
Health and emergency preparedness
The police advised pilgrims to carry identification documents and some emergency funds in case they become separated from their groups or require assistance. Those with medical conditions were encouraged to travel with medication and be prepared for long hours on the road.
Medical response teams, along with surveillance and security patrols, will be deployed to provide support and maintain order throughout the event.
Criminal activity and impersonation
The police also warned of the risk of imposters, including fake priests and conmen, who often take advantage of the crowds to steal from unsuspecting pilgrims. Rowdy youth groups, known locally as Egali, have also been identified as potential threats, engaging in theft and mugging.
“We are aware of these threats and are working closely with other security agencies to address any criminal activity decisively,” the statement assured. “Robust measures, including increased patrols and surveillance, are in place to ensure public safety.”
Additional security guidelines and updates will be communicated in the lead-up to the celebrations.
Martyrs’ Day honours the memory of 45 Christian converts who were executed between 1885 and 1887 for their faith on the orders of King Mwanga II of Buganda. The annual pilgrimage to Namugongo remains a deeply spiritual and nationally significant occasion.
For the Catholics, The Catholic Diocese of Lugazi will be leading the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo. This is the second time Lugazi Diocese has led the annual celebration. The celebrations, scheduled for June 3rd, will be a time of reflection and remembrance for all Christians in Uganda, according to Msgr. Kayondo from Lugazi Diocese.
The Northern Uganda Regional Cluster will be leading the Anglican Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo. This cluster includes the Dioceses of Northern Uganda, Lango, West Lango, Madi-West Nile, Kitgum, and Nebbi. The main preacher for the 2025 commemoration will be retired Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi.
