PM Nabbanja warns Banyoro locals against land fragmentation

KAKUMIRO, May 6, 2024 – The Ugandan Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has warned the people of Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom against land fragmentation.

Nabbanja who is also the Kakumiro district Woman Member of Parliament urged political leaders in Bunyoro Sub-region to sensitise the people against land fragmentation, saying the practice is rampant among the predominantly agriculture-dependent communities and threatens food security.

Nabbanja said the biggest challenge facing Ugandan agriculture is land fragmentation associated with the traditional inheritance practices. She advised the people of Bunyoro Sub-region to shun the practice and instead utilise the land as a family, and not as individuals.

She further attributed the bad practice  to the uncontrolled land selling in the region and migration.

“When you divide land among your children, these children start selling plots and the end results is migration of families. This habit is not good, let us embrace using land as a family instead of dividing it among family members,” she said.

He made the remarks recently at the   celebration of the belated International Women’s Day for Kikuube district organised by Kikuube district Women Council and Woman Member of Parliament ,Florence Natumanya and held at Rwemisanga Primary School in Kyangwali Sub-county in Kikuube district, under the theme, ‘Invest in Women: Accelerate progresses”.

MP Natumanya called on the government to intervene into the increasing land conflicts in the district. She noted that most women have no land rights, something she said prevents them from from engaging in development activities such as commercial agriculture.

She expressed excitement, saying the Lands ministry is planning to process 200 customary land titles for the local communities  in Kikuube district.
