PDM: Patongo Town Council disburses Shs 800mln to beneficiaries

AGAGO, February 24, 2025 – Local leaders in Patongo Town Council, Agago district, have pledged to embrace all government programmes aimed at combating poverty and generating household incomes.
The LC3 Chairperson of the Town Council, Joseph Komakech, expressed his gratitude to the government for initiatives such as the Parish Development Model [PDM], Emyooga, and Generating Growth and Opportunities for Productivity Enterprises [GGOP] projects.
He stated that over the last two financial years, Patongo Town Council received Shs 800 million, which has been disbursed to PDM beneficiaries across the four parishes.
Komakech made the remarks during the commissioning of the Patongo Youth Centre, which was refurbished by the International Centre for Transitional Justice [ICTJ] with funding from the Austrian Development Cooperation.
“We are monitoring and following up to ensure that the programme has a significant impact and that people are able to rise out of poverty,” Komakech said at the ceremony, which was attended by the Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny Dollo Chigamoi.
He also highlighted the positive performance of other initiatives, such as the Youth Livelihood Programme [YLP], which has funded several youth projects within Patongo Town Council.
Komakech further commended the development partners, the International Centre for Transitional Justice and Austrian Development Cooperation, for funding the renovation of the Centre.
Owiny Dollo cautioned against engaging in unproductive activities that do not contribute to improving household income. He emphasised that the Youth Centre is intended to be a one-stop facility to promote productive engagements and talent development, rather than a place for gambling.
He added that the Centre provides opportunities for mentorship and moral rebuilding for young people who, due to the traumatic past caused by the brutal LRA conflicts, had been involved in unproductive activities such as gambling and alcohol consumption.
Dr Katja Kerschbaumer, Head of the Austrian Embassy and Development Cooperation, stated that Uganda has been a priority for Austrian Development Aid since 1992. Austria has worked closely with government institutions, companies, multilateral entities such as the United Nations, nongovernmental organisations, local communities, and international donors.
She further mentioned that Austria supports Uganda in two main areas: water and sanitation, and access to justice.
Kerschbaumer added that the Youth Centre is one of many projects supported by Austrian Development Cooperation, noting that the initiative is not just about building infrastructure but also about creating a space for youth, particularly those who were affected by the LRA insurgency in the district.
