OYAM – Some political leaders in Oyam district are agitating for the splitting of it into two, claiming it would ensure the effective implementation of the Parish Development Model [PDM].
The politicians who want the district to be split claim it is the biggest in Lango Sub-region with an estimated population of 500,000 people living in 1,196 villages and 74 parishes.
The district LC5 chairperson, Benson Dila Oyuku claimed that some districts in the country have only four sub- counties. He said Oyam has 16 administrative units with 334 polling stations.
Dila was also concerned that the district is supposed to have health centre IIIs and the hospital but that there is nothing of the kind.
“My request is that you [MP Santa Alum Ogwang] and other colleagues should do what it takes to ensure that Oyam is divided into two districts to ease service delivery,” Dila said while receiving two ambulances donated by MP Alum.
Alum who is Oyam district Woman MP handed over two ambulances worth Shs 320 million to support maternal and emergency referrals in the district.
Dila claimed that some districts in the country have two sub-counties and one town council which makes it easy to manage and deliver services to the people.
MP Alum said Oyam is big in both size and population which she said is disadvantageous to the population when it comes to the allocation of PDM resources and its implementation.
She said each parish in the district is scheduled to receive Shs 100mln per year for five years beginning with the current financial year. However, she said this is not enough for some parishes in the district since they are as big as some sub-counties in the country.
“I want to appeal to the government that when the time comes, Oyam should be divided into two for effective implementation of PDM and other government programmes,” she added.
She added that as a result of that, the communities tabled before her a desperate demand for the ambulances in the district since what was donated was not enough to service the overwhelming population.
The MP claimed that years ago, the government came out with a policy of one county, one district, yet Oyam district was not given the chance even though it has two counties [Oyam South and North].
