PDM: Nwoya district moves to create more villages, parishes

NWOYA– Nwoya district council is considering creating more villages and parishes in the next council meetings in order for the Parish Development Model [MPD] to have a meaningful impact on the local people.

Currently, the district has a total of 44 parishes and 146 villages. In the new proposal, the district wants to increase the number of villages to 500 and parishes to 100. As it stands, the district will only get Shs 4.4 billion under the PDM.

Geoffrey Axuma, the Nwoya District Information Officer said they were advised by the Ministry of Local Government to increase the number of villages and parishes.

“Considering the size of the district and some parishes which are the size of a sub county or a county in other districts, we were advised that we needed to create more administrative units in order to facilitate easy access and service delivery to the common man,” Axuma said.

Axuma noted some of the big villages in the district like Got Okwara and Arana, which are hard to reach as well as Luliango Parish, which has two big villages including corner Nwoya and Alingiri among others.

According to Axuma, as it is now, several members of the community struggle to access basic social services due to the long distances and accessibility which would be solved by creating more parishes.

The creation of new villages and parishes is expected to be tabled for discussion when the district council resumes business in August this year.

Emmanuel Orach, the Nwoya district LCV Chairperson says they want to take social services closer to the community members even areas, which initially were hard to reach.

Orach says that they hope to have the latest development to be approved by the district council and the Ministry of Local Government such that in the subsequent PDM funding.
