Partners seeking applications for the 2025 Global Cooperative Law Summer School

KAMPALA, March 5, 2025; The International Cooperative Alliance [ICA] and St. Mary’s University, Canada, are inviting lawyers, economists, policymakers, and, most importantly, cooperators from all sectors to the second edition of the Cooperative Law Summer School. This event will explore cooperative law and its relationship to cooperative identity and sustainable development.

As part of the International Year of Cooperatives [IYC 2025], this international masterclass on cooperative law and public policy will deepen participants’ knowledge and strengthen their legal and policy advocacy, helping to advance the cooperative economy beyond the UN’s International Year of Cooperatives.

The course will run from 24 to 29 August 2025 at the Juraj Dobrila University in Pula, Croatia. The lectures and workshops will be led by Professor Hagen Henry, Chair of the ICA Cooperative Law Committee. The working language of the Summer School will be English.

This course will establish connections between cooperative law, the Statement on the Cooperative Identity [ICA, 1995], and sustainable development. It is relevant to an international audience and applies to all types of cooperatives and mutuals across various economic sectors.

Lectures and interactive sessions will cover topics such as:

Additionally, the Summer School will be preceded by a half-day, free, and open symposium, which will discuss the Cooperative Legal Framework Analysis carried out by the International Cooperative Alliance and its regional offices under the ICA-EU Financial Framework Partnership Agreement [#Coops4Dev]. This symposium will take place on 23 August 2025 at the same venue.
