Parents urged to equip their children with life skills

SOROTI CITY, November 12, 2024 – Parents have been encouraged to actively engage their children in productive activities, particularly by teaching them valuable life skills, rather than allowing them to idle away their time during school holidays.

Moses Okurut, Director of Studies at Soroti Open Nursery and Primary School in Soroti City, made the call during the school’s 3rd graduation ceremony held recently for Primary Seven candidates. A total of 37 Primary Seven candidates were awarded certificates of completion at the event, having sat for this year’s Primary Leaving Examination [PLE].

Okurut, who also serves as the Primary Seven class teacher, emphasised the importance of life skills training for children. He advised parents to guide their children towards activities that would be beneficial for their future. “It is crucial that children engage in skill-building activities. They have a long way to go, and these skills will help them succeed,” he said.

He further cautioned parents to prevent their children from engaging in unproductive or distracting visits during their vacation, urging them instead to enroll their children in short courses or other meaningful activities. “Parents, avoid allowing your children to have irrelevant visits that could derail their progress. Instead, invest in training them to be better people in the future,” Okurut added.

Simon Edweu, the Headteacher of Soroti Open Nursery and Primary School, confirmed that 37 pupils had successfully completed their PLE whose results are expected to be released net year. He reminded parents of their crucial role in mentoring their children even after they leave school, encouraging them to continue providing guidance and support at home.

“Parents, keep mentoring your children so they can grow into responsible individuals in the future,” Edweu urged. He also encouraged the graduates to continue their spiritual growth by reading the Bible, a practice the school has fostered throughout their time there.

Hellen Akello, a parent representative, reflected on the journey her children had taken from nursery school to graduation. “It has not been an easy journey for us as parents, but seeing our children graduate to the next level is a great reward,” Akello said.

She urged fellow parents to keep investing in their children’s education, emphasising that the fruits of such investment would be seen in the future.

The parent also expressed gratitude to the school administration for their role in nurturing the children both spiritually and morally. “We thank the school for helping shape our children’s character and values,” she said.

The graduation ceremony for the Primary Seven candidates was a reminder of the collective responsibility of both parents and teachers in shaping the future of the students, encouraging a strong partnership to ensure that children not only excel academically but also grow into well-rounded, responsible individuals.
