OWC boosts Gulu Ghetto Mothers’ SACCO with Shs 8mln
Many of the beneficiaries had previously relied on roadside vending but lost their source of income following the recent enforcement of trade order regulations
GULU CITY, April 16, 2026 — The Uganda People’s Defence Forces [UPDF] 4th Infantry Division Commander, Maj Gen. Felix Busizoori, has handed over Shs 8 million to the Gulu Ghetto Mothers’ Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation [SACCO] in Pece-Laroo Division.
The SACCO brings together women engaged in income-generating activities such as poultry farming and informal trade, including the sale of foodstuffs.
The funds, provided by the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation [OWC], Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho, popularly known as Salim Saleh, form part of broader efforts under the government initiative to uplift vulnerable groups and promote grassroots economic development.
Many of the beneficiaries had previously relied on roadside vending but lost their source of income following the recent enforcement of trade order regulations. With limited alternatives, they struggled to support their families, prompting the intervention to help them establish more stable and dignified livelihoods.
While handing over the funds on Tuesday, Busizoori underscored the critical role women play in sustaining families and communities, often under challenging conditions. He said empowering women is key to improving household welfare and fostering social stability.
“This support is intended to strengthen your SACCO and improve your livelihoods. Women are the pillars of our society, and their empowerment benefits the entire community,” he said.
The SACCO Chairperson, Hanifa Haruna, welcomed the support and pledged prudent management of the funds.
“We are committed to ensuring the responsible use of these funds to expand our businesses and improve our standards of living,” she said.
Beneficiaries were urged to remain united, disciplined and focused in utilising the funds, with confidence that the initiative will enhance livelihoods and contribute to sustainable community development.
