LIRA- A total of 728 students of Uganda Technical College [UTC]-Lira have graduated with Higher and National Diplomas in five academic disciplines.
According to the graduation list availed to parents and graduates, 656 were male and their female counterparts were only 72.
They graduated in ICT, National Diploma in Architecture, Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Water and Sanitation Engineering, Electrical and Construction [Building and Civil Engineering].
The ceremony was presided over by the Executive Secretary of Business and Technical Examination Board, Onesmus Oyesigye at the campus located at Lira City East Division, Lira City.
He urged community and religious leaders in the country to encourage female learners to take up technical education and be able to earn a living.
He said the government is investing a lot of resources in science and technology to train learners and be able to meet the current job market.
“It is an area where the government has done a lot because according to the current policy, every technical institution that comes up, the government puts special facilities for girls and it is an affirmative action,” he added.
He explained that what is remaining is to encourage female students to join because it is no longer male-dominated profession.
At the ceremony, Angom Brigal Patience, one of the graduates of the National Diploma in Information and Communication Technology who scored 1st class out of the 24 best graduates, was offered a mattress.
Others were also gifted with mattresses including, David Ayella and Baize Benjamin both students of the National Diploma in Information and Communication Technology [ICT].
“They [females] also need to come and join to ensure that in future, they are able to put food on the table for their children,” he said.
Jacob Akunobere, the Principal commended the Ministry of Education and Sports for transforming the institution into a Centre of Excellence on road and bridge construction, maintenance, topographical and land survey, material, and soil testing.
