Over 300 graduate from Lira University

LIRA-Lira University last Friday passed out a total of 377 students who completed studies in different academic disciplines.

The graduands received Masters, and Bachelors degrees as well as Post-graduate diplomas in Business Administration, Arts in Public Administration and Management, Public Health, Bachelor of Science in Midwifery, Community Psychology, and Psychotherapy among others.

According to officials, there has been a marked increase in the number of students graduating from the university.

In 2019 when the university first held its graduation, at least 192 were passed out, followed by 343 who graduated in 2021.

President Museveni in a speech read for him by Vice President Jessica Alupo during the graduation ceremony lauded the leadership of the university for staying on course of being a centre of Applied Science and Technology in Uganda.

He said the National Resistance Movement [NRM] government will remain committed to the promotion of science and technology as the main enabler of development of Uganda.

“I am optimistic that the graduates from this university will form a formidable force that will spur Uganda’s industrialisation and technological advancement since they are teaching relevant academic courses,” he said.

Museveni added that Lira University is equipping students with skills that give them a better standing in the job market.

“This is the only way government and parents will gain value from enormous investment in our children’s education,” he added.

He hinted that the problem of unemployment among young graduates can be easily solved if all institutions of higher learning teach courses relevant to the job market.

“The public sector has only 469,216 jobs, which is completely incomparable to the population of 45 million Ugandan,” Museveni said.

He said the NRM has created a favourable environment to attract both local and foreign investors, adding that his government is prioritising industrialisation to cut down excessive importation of items since some will be produced in Uganda.
