OMORO – The President General of the Democratic Party [DP], Norbert Mao, has said the late Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Jacob Oulanyah, supported co-operatives as well as other enterprises in the Northern region of Uganda.
Mao, a friend of the late speaker of parliament, but also hails from the North, made the remarks on Friday in Omoro district as the country held the state burial of the former speaker who died on March 20, 2022 in Seattle USA, with medics attributing his death to multiple organ failure.
There are many cooperatives in Northern Uganda, most of them involved in agricultural production. Some of them include; Awac Roc-kwo Cooperative Society, Bungatira Bed Ki Gen Farmers, Akonye-kena Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd and Cwero Cooperative Society Ltd, Kweyo Growers Cooperative Society Limited and Puranga- Gem Cooperative Society.
Mao, who called for unity in the country, said Oulanyah supported initiatives such as Atiak Sugar Factory which has some dealings with cooperatives and other groups. According to Wikipedia, the factory has contracted over 5,000 sugarcane out-growers.
Meanwhile, Oulanyah’s father, Nathan L’okori, while addressing mourners said his son was poisoned. Though he addressed mourners in the local language Acholi, L’okori’s statement was translated in English by Mao for non-Acholi speakers.
“I am not mourning in vain. I want to state clearly that Jacob Oulanyah was poisoned. He told me. The doctors tried to deal with the poison. It affected his health so badly that he could not recover,” Mao quoted L’okori.
According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Oulanyah’s heart, lungs, liver and kidney all failed. She said the liver started failing while he was in Uganda and the lungs had started collecting fluids. The Minister made the revelation days ago while presenting a report on Oulnayhah’s health at the special sitting of Parliament to honour him.
Oulanyah was on Friday evening laid to rest at Lony village, Lalogi sub-county, Omoro district. Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral service. They included national leaders cut across the clergy, legislators, businesspersons, sportsmen, media, legal fraternity, politicians, ministers, students, educationists and the general population. Prominent among the mourners were; the Speaker of Parliament Anita Among, Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny Dollo and Vice President, Jessica Alupo.
Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Samuel Kazimba Mugalu, assisted by his juniors, led the prayers to send off Oulanyah to his final resting place, after spending 56 years on planet earth.
