Otuke gets Shs 1.5bln Business and Governance Centre

OTUKE-The United Nations Capital Development Fund [UNCDF] through Development Initiative for Northern Uganda [DINU] has constructed Shs 1.5 billion Business and Governance Centre in Otuke district to enhance local revenue and create jobs.

According to the district commercial officer, Charles Opio, bank services, pharmacies, restaurants, office space, supermarkets, telecommunication services, and conference halls among others will be available at the centre soon to be completed and commissioned next month.

The construction of the centre kicked off in 2019 and it is being undertaken by Whismy [U] Ltd with funding under DINU Local Government Excellency Fund.

According to Opio, the new centre will also create 200 jobs mainly for youths and women.

“We have NGOs, telecommunication companies, banks, shops, and people willing to open restaurants within the facility,” he said.

The Otuke district LC5 chairperson, Francis Abola said the establishment of the business centre will boost local revenue to finance some of the development projects in the district.

He said funding from the government and development partners sometimes delays, affecting budget implementation but added that the new centre is a potential source of revenue that will fund certain activities without external help.

The UNCDF deputy director, Jennifer Bukokhe said the development of the Business and Governance Centre showed DINU was transformative in northern Uganda.

“There were many challenges here and there and people were complaining that we were doing nothing but with this facility and others in the sub-regions, it indicates that there is a lot of transformation,” she added.
