OPM to host conference on SDGs

MBARARA – The Office of the Prime Minister will on June 22-23, 2023 host the Uganda Annual Sustainable Development Goals [ SDGs ] Conference [UASDGC].

According to Onesmus Kansiime, the knowledge management officer at the OPM, in 2022, Uganda developed and adopted the UASDGC to provide a platform for multi-stakeholder engagement, review and validation of the country’s journey in the actions to accelerate the delivery of SDGs and Agenda 2063.

“This year, the government of Uganda through the Office of the Prime Minister is going to hold the 2nd Uganda Annual SDG Conference for the year 2023 as a means to review the mid-term progress of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development,” Kansiime said.

Before the conference takes place, there will be a marathon of regional SDG festivals, activities, and forums across the country such as; caravans, radio talk shows, tree planting trees, citizens’ parliament, football matches, youth skilling workshops among others.

According to Kansiime, on May 18, 2023, there will be a regional stakeholders’ forum in Mbarara City to exchange ideas on SDGs local action plans and policies. Similar same events will take place in Jinja City, Mubende Town and Lira City.

“We are coming to the regions to make sure that we engage everyone starting from the grassroots level and build mechanisms at the local government level to review and assess themselves in the progress of the implementation of 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063,” Kansiime said

He said regional forums will create awareness and cautiousness about the SDGs and steer improved actions to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs by 2030.

“The discussions from the regional levels will be fed into those at the national level where people’s issues at grass root will be captured at the national level,” Kansiime said.

Muganzi Prisca, the deputy mayor Mbarara City asked locals in the city to participate in the events organised as the country reviews and assesses the journey so far in the achievement of the SDGs in Uganda.

“I want to thank the Office of the Prime Minister for the journey we have made in education, health, and environmental conservation. Therefore, I call upon all categories of people in Mbarara to play an active role in shaping the future of our communities towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” Muganzi said.

She added that Mbarara City has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable development initiatives, thus appealing to its residents to maintain the tradition.

This year’s SDGs Conference will be held at Kampala Serena Hotel under the theme: “Leveraging Inclusive National and Continental Actions for Accelerated Delivery on the SDGs and Agenda 2063”.

President Yoweri Museveni is expected to grace the celebrations as the Chief Guest.

According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, Uganda has so far registered 50 percent progress towards achieving the 2030 SDGs Agenda.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 SDGs, which are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognise that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests

Meanwhile, the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Report will be launched as the world approaches the half-way point of the 2030 Agenda and struggles to rebuild in the aftermath [or in the midst] of the COVID-19 pandemic. In this context, practical solutions that can accelerate progress on the SDGs will be urgently needed.

The 2023 Report will build on the 2019 Report providing evidence that can help decision-makers to accelerate action and overcome impediments that stand in the way of progress on sustainable development.
