Odrek Rwabogo inaugurates new coffee factory in Bugisu

The event marked progress in Uganda’s coffee sector and reflected on the transformative journey of empowerment and development within the country

MBALE, December 11, 2024 – The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development [PACEID], Odrek Rwabwogo, recently inaugurated the Balambuli Kwigatte Coffee [BKC] Factory and the Elgon Production Consortium (EPC) for Exports in Busoba Subcounty, Mbale district, Bugisu Subregion.

Rwabogo highlighted that the factory, which will roast coffee, will reduce the need to import roasted coffee [about 40,000 tonnes], despite Uganda being a major producer of green beans.

The event marked progress in Uganda’s coffee sector and reflected on the transformative journey of empowerment and development within the country. Rwabwogo called for a focus on quality in both coffee production and roasting, noting that this would secure better prices in the global market.

Rwabwogo shared his personal connection to Mbale district, dating back to 1992 when he first arrived as a young university student. He recalled being elected in Nabumali, alongside the late Dorothy Nangwale, to lead the National Students Association. “That experience marked the beginning of my lifelong relationship with this region, a relationship rooted in teaching, mentoring, and inspiring countless young people,” he said.

He also emphasised the importance of restoring Africa’s dignity on the international stage. “This requires retooling our understanding of markets, moving from basic agricultural practices to industrial-scale production, and aligning with market demands. Uganda’s growth depends on building a foundation of leaders who not only understand what needs to be done but also possess the vision and integrity to work for the greater good of our nation,” he said.

He further stressed the need for structured thinking and purposeful leadership that goes beyond the pursuit of political office. “True growth comes when leaders focus on building sustainable systems that empower communities and create lasting change,” he added.

Also speaking at the event, Ben Mukhone, the Founder and Chairman of BKC, which produces high-quality Arabica coffee from Buginyanya in Bulambuli district, shared that he has been an avid follower of Rwabwogo’s teachings since 2015.

“Opening this state-of-the-art facility and introducing us to international coffee buyers and roasters marks the beginning of a new chapter for Uganda’s coffee exports. We are committed to supporting PACEID in fulfilling their export orders and expanding their reach,” said Mukhone.

The collective efforts of the district leadership in Mbale and Bulambuli have been instrumental in supporting BKC Coffee’s growth. Their collaboration serves as a shining example of how local governance can drive economic growth and inspire innovation.

The factory is set to process and export over 300 tonnes of coffee to Asia, Europe, and other regions, including the East African Community and the African continent as a whole.

Mukhone also shared plans for the future, stating his intention to establish a coffee school to help farmers improve their skills, increase yields, and ensure the long-term sustainability of Uganda’s coffee industry.

Hussein Hirji of Darley Investments Limited described the BKC Factory as more than just a processing plant, calling it a symbol of progress and commitment to empowering coffee farmers in the Bugisu Subregion. “We are connecting farmers directly to the market, and their exceptional coffee will continue to provide them with better returns,” said Hirji.
