Nutri Nova trains Masindi farmers on disease control

MASINDI – Farmers in Masindi district have been trained on disease control and how to manage them in case an outbreak occurs.

The trained farmers include; the cattle keepers, poultry farmers and pig keepers. Nutri Nova trained them at Devenue Hotel in Masindi town.

They were also trained on the management and administration of vaccines, proper feeding and feed mixture.

“Always have Personal Protective Gears for the farms. Never let a stranger to enter your farms without PPEs. That’s how you will be able to fight disease outbreak,” advised Dr. Wickliff Kiyinji, the animal husbandry nutritionist.

Most of the farmers complained about the quality of vaccines on market saying, they are hit by diseases even if they have vaccinated.

“We don’t know whether the problem is with us the farmers or the people who manufacture the vaccines!” asked John Kiiza a poultry farmer from Kirasa cell in Masindi municipality.

Other farmers complained of the poor quality of eggs they get and the chicken and yet they give everything necessary to feed them.

But Dr. Kiyinji explained that the biggest challenge is with the farmers. Most of them poorly mix the feeds and the environment where they keep their birds which determines the output.

He asked the farmers to always follow the training guide from the experts. He further noted that most of the farmers inject a lot of money in their farms but they get little because they lack knowledge.

Kiyinji also said in most places in the country, farmers are experiencing diseases like new castle, coccidiosis, swine fever, foot and mouth disease among others because they don’t practice biosecurity in their farms.

“If all protocols were being followed in the farms, they would not face much disease outbreak in the farms,” the Dr added.

He also advised the farmers involved in chicken and pig rearing to always ensure that they maintain good hygiene and also properly construct shelter where chicken and pigs live if they are to benefit from its farming.

The farmers who spoke to theCooperator confirmed that they didn’t know what they have been doing explaining that the knowledge they acquired is going to help improve on what they have doing.

“I have been having a challenge in mixing maize feeds. I can now do it better. I am ready to change the way I have been working,” said Alice Asaba from Kinogozi cell in Masindi municipality.

However, some farmers decried the low prices of poultry products saying, they use a lot of money to buy vaccines and other necessities but the prices for the products are not favourable.

Yusufu Sekamanyi, the Sales and Marketing Manager, Nutri Nova said, they organised the training to help the farmers understand the challenges they face and also give them a solution on how to go about them.

“Our main target is to educate them on how to do biosecurity because when a single farmer is affected, the damage may spread to the whole country. At the moment, almost the whole country is grappling with the disease because sometimes enough sensitisation is not done,” noted Sekamanyi.

The farmers were also awarded with certificates after attending the training.
