NTUNGAMO, November 21, 2024 – Samuel Mucunguzi, the LCV Chairperson of Ntungamo district, has called for regular training of leaders, and managers of Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs], arguing that such training would improve the performance of these community financial intermediaries.
Mucunguzi made the call days ago while speaking as the Chief Guest at the training of Ntungamo SACCO Union leaders, held at the Ntungamo District Council Hall. He further emphasised that providing training to SACCO leaders and managers would enhance their operational efficiency.
He stated that his leadership is committed to strengthening the district commercial department to ensure SACCOs receive the necessary knowledge, skills, and support to reach their full potential and thrive.
The Chairperson also highlighted recent improvements in the supervision of Ntungamo SACCO Union staff and managers, noting that this has helped secure the savings of members in the district.
He stressed the importance of SACCOs in the country. “SACCOs play a vital role in providing financial support to the community, fostering economic growth, and enabling citizens to achieve their aspirations,” said Mucunguzi.
He also urged SACCOs to regularly engage with their members to ensure that loans are used for their intended purposes.
On his part, Isaiah Kanyamahane, the Resident District Commissioner of Ntungamo, called for collective efforts to combat poverty, emphasising the importance of unity between local leaders and residents in achieving economic progress.
Meanwhile, Ndibarema Wabaitwabaabo, Chairperson of the Ntungamo SACCO Union, reiterated the importance of teamwork in improving access to affordable financial services for local residents, which in turn strengthens household economies. He insisted that SACCO management should prioritise regular training for their staff to enhance service delivery.
On his part, Ivan Asiimwe, General Secretary of the Uganda Cooperative Alliance [UCA] and chief facilitator of the training, underscored the responsibility of SACCOs to educate their members, empowering them to make informed financial decisions.
Asiimwe added that the training session for Ntungamo SACCO Union leaders focused on building their capacity in governance, risk management, and regulatory compliance.
