NRM to form SACCOs countrywide

OMORO– The National Resistance Movement Organisation [NRM] is considering establishing Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations [SACCOs] at the grassroots in a bid to fight poverty among its members.

This follows complaints from the village, parish, Subcounty, and district members who said they are not being supported to economically transform their party even when they work hard to ensure victory for the party candidates.

Richard Todwong, the NRM Secretary General confirmed to this reporter yesterday that the party’s leadership is already in the process of establishing SACCOs to financially and socially support and strengthen members.

Without saying when it could eventually be rolled out, Todwong noted that discussions were already at the climax with the national party Chairperson President Museveni to see how the party leaders are supported.

“It`s part of our policy and programmes that we empower our leaders and encourage them to be productive. Because now with the Parish Development Module, we don’t want to use money from the module to support them. So we want to create a parallel mechanism so that they are empowered, and lead by example,” Todwong noted.

Last year, the party distributed bicycles and motorcycles to the village and sub-county party chairpersons in a bid to improve accessibility and mobilisation of the masses.

Evelyn Laker, the Omoro NRM District Vice Chairperson said that she has received concerns from the party’s rural structures of being abandoned by the leadership after the end of the elections.

She said that many of the party members complain they are neither appreciated for their efforts nor empowered to fight household poverty.

Douglas Okello Peter, the Omoro District LCV Chairperson supported the idea of establishing SACCOs through which he said party members can easily be economically empowered.

Okello who also belongs to the NRM said members would be happy to work for the party if the SACCOs initiative is implemented by the party’s top organs.
